The Buzz Week in Review

by Mike Krumboltz

Camilla Belle

If you’re looking to catch up on what’s hot, you’ve come to the right place. This is the Buzz Log Week in Review, where we recap the week’s top stories. Read on for the scoop on a budding romance, four alien worlds, and one mega-retailer that’s seen better days.

Meet Camilla Belle
When do you know you’ve made it? Simple. When people push searches on your name up 6,103% in a week. That’s exactly what happened to Camilla Belle, the brunette starlet best known for screaming her lungs out in “When a Stranger Calls,” after folks learned that she is dating a Jonas Brother. Related searches on “camila belle pictures” surged, as did lookups for her new beau, Joe Jonas. She’s not yet A-list, but by dating one of the most popular celebs on the planet, she’s seeing her buzz score skyrocket. Call it the Guy Ritchie effect.

Not all telescopes are used for peeping
Scientists discovered not one, not two, but four planets this week. Sources confirmed that the planets are gaseous and not habitable, but apparently “they raise the possibility” of finding others that are “more hospitable.” So, what made these planets so special? According to USA Today, “this is the first image of a multi-planet solar system.” Previous planetary discoveries have relied on gravitational anomalies. To the untrained eye (like ours), the photos look rather unremarkable. Here’s hoping the scientists aren’t just showing us a picture of some pocket lint.

Tough Times at the City of Circuits
Electronics retailer Circuit City declared bankruptcy amid slowing sales. The struggling outlet will slash jobs and close stores, but continue to operate. Many experts are questioning whether the chain can survive as it continues to see its chief rival, Best Buy, eat its lunch as well as market share.

Also buzzing this week…
• In an interview with BBC News, Angelina Jolie said she “doesn’t plan to keep acting very long.” No word yet on the timeline, but hopefully she’ll quit before somebody offers a bag full of cash for “Tomb Raider 3.”
• Look out, there’s a new lawsuit in town! This one aims to take Classmates.com to court for sending out all those mass emails saying “someone from your class is looking for you.” Apparently some poor chump actually signed up for the site only to discover that nobody was really looking for him. Outrage and legal action quickly ensued.

Reflections on Proposition 8

November 18th, 2008

Reflections on Proposition 8
Reflections on Proposition 8
By Kevin Drum, Mother Jones Magazine

The United States took away rights yesterday.

It’s a stunning thing to acknowledge. On the same day we culminated a civil rights struggle that spans our nation’s entire history by electing the first African-American president of the United States, California voters revoked the right of some citizens of their state to marry the people they love, and nullified the bonds of some who already had.

California’s Proposition 8 amends the California state constitution to eliminate the right to marry awarded to homosexuals by the California courts in May 2008. Further, it states that only marriages between a man and a woman are recognized by the state, thus shredding the marriages that have occurred since the court decision. It passed yesterday by a vote of 52-48.

If you look at the front page of any newspaper today, you’ll find heart-warming plaudits for the country about racial healing and America’s progress since the civil rights movement. Count me out. Barack Obama won because the Bush Administration hung a 30-pound anchor around the neck of every Republican in the country, because the economy cratered just before the election and his opponent showed no capacity to understand the problem, and because he ran the best campaign in recent memory. You cannot divorce his victory from those facts. Yes, his ascendance to the White House is a wonderful thing for everyone in this country — black, white, or otherwise — who have struggled for rights, and it a wonderful thing for children of all colors, who now know without a doubt that there are no limits on their potential. But Obama’s victory is muddied by too many other factors, some small but some quite large, to be taken as a clear sign that we have made substantial progress on the question of tolerance.

You see, Proposition 8 was a test of our tolerance, unmuddied. It was a straightforward question to a state that likes to think of itself as the most progressive in the Union — do you want to take away civil rights already granted to a minority group? The issues of unemployment, the stock market, gas prices, healthcare — all of which added nuance to the presidential election — were stripped away. It was a question of California’s tolerance in a vacuum. And California failed.

The reason why this pains me to such an extent is because I’m from California. The decision violates, violently, the image of my state that I have held with such pride my entire life. California is a wonderful place for a lot of reasons, but foremost among them is the way in which it welcomes people and their lifestyles. The state cherishes its diversity — I’ve written before, in a defense of a humane immigration policy, that I grew up in Northern California schools that were routinely over half Asian-American. The rest of our community was white, Hispanic, and to a lesser extent, African-American. It was impossible to leave without some vague notion that our lives are brighter for the diversity of people we get to share them with, and that our understanding of the world is richer for all the reflections of it in our day-to-day experience. And, ultimately, one emerges with an even stronger commitment to a future of shared success when the struggles of African-Americans, immigrants, and the gay community are before one’s eyes.

And so it is a shock to acknowledge that my vision of California is not shared by the majority of the state’s residents. It is particularly ironic, considering how the measure succeeded. Minorities voted for it. Barack Obama’s victory is a clear statement that respect is owed people of all races, who have the capacity to excel equally. It is a short step away from believing that respect is owed people of all sexual orientations, who have the capacity to love equally. And yet, African-Americans voted in favor of Proposition 8 by a huge margin, 70-30. Latinos supported it by a much smaller 53-47. Whites and Asians both voted against by a slim 49-51. These numbers dumbfound me.

The other strong predictor of how someone voted on Proposition 8 was age. Only the 18-29 age demographic voted against it. Young people rejected the idea of limiting the right to marry 61-39. Voters 30-64 voted in favor by about 10 points, and voters over 65 reversed the youngsters’ vote, 39-61.

The fact that younger Americans support marriage equality by such vast numbers means that the writing is on the wall. Proposition 8 and what it represents will not stand the test of time. In the coming days it will likely face legal challenges, and a constitutional amendment reversing the decision is possible in the short term. But it is the long term that holds out the real promise of change. Martin Luther King Jr., in a quote that is more relevant today than ever, said the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. King’s statement was never meant to apply exclusively to African-Americans. In applies to every group treated unequally in this country. It is simply the case that for some, the arc bends more slowly.

Proposition 8 is just one hurdle in a race that equality will eventually win. But that does not make its passage any easier to stomach. California now joins the ignominious list of states that have had the opportunity to expand civil rights and decided instead to take them away.

PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!!
PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!!
Taken by my sister Deana in Manassas, VA the night before he made history as the first African-American elected president. She and my mom got there at 6 am and waited till 9:00 pm for his arrival! They were practically right up against the stage. Amazing…truly amazing. For the first time in my life, I feel hopeful not only about our country, but about the state of the planet. I’m not saying he’s some kind of magician or messiah, so calm down. But it’s clear he’s got what it takes - brains, temperament, judgment - to bring good things about. Just wait and see.

IF there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place
where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our
founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our
democracy, tonight is your answer.
It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches
in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours
and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because
they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could
be that difference.
It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and
Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight,
disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world
that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we
are, and always will be, the United States of America.
It’s the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many
to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put
their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope
of a better day.
It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on
this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to
America.
I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long
and hard in this campaign, and he’s fought even longer and harder for
the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of
us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service
rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and
Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working
with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead.
I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from
his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets
of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the Vice
President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.
I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of
my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and
the love of my life, our nation’s next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha
and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy
that’s coming with us to the White House. And while she’s no longer with
us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made
me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is
beyond measure.
To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod,
and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics -
you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you’ve
sacrificed to get it done.
But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to -
it belongs to you.
I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn’t start
with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in
the halls of Washington - it began in the backyards of Des Moines and
the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.
It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings
they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this
cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of
their generation’s apathy; who left their homes and their families for
jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young
people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the
doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who
volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries
later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has
not perished from this Earth. This is your victory.
I know you didn’t do this just to win an election and I know you didn’t
do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task
that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the
challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime -
two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.
Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking
up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their
lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after
their children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage, or
pay their doctor’s bills, or save enough for college. There is new
energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and
threats to meet and alliances to repair.
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get
there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more
hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as
a people will get there.
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree
with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that
government can’t solve every problem. But I will always be honest with
you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when
we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking
this nation the only way it’s been done in America for two-hundred and
twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by
calloused hand.
What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on
this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is
only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we
go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and
responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and
look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if
this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a
thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we
rise or fall as one nation; as one people.
Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and
pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let
us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on
the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity.
Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a
great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and
determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As
Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, “We are not
enemies, but friends.though passion may have strained it must not break
our bonds of affection.” And to those Americans whose support I have yet
to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need
your help, and I will be your President too.
And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from
parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the
forgotten corners of our world - our stories are singular, but our
destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To
those who would tear this world down - we will defeat you. To those who
seek peace and security - we support you. And to all those who have
wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved
once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the
might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring
power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding
hope.
For that is the true genius of America - that America can change. Our
union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope
for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.
This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for
generations. But one that’s on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast
her ballot in Atlanta. She’s a lot like the millions of others who stood
in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing
- Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no
cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn’t
vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color
of her skin.
And tonight, I think about all that she’s seen throughout her century in
America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the
times we were told that we can’t, and the people who pressed on with
that American creed: Yes we can.
At a time when women’s voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed,
she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot.
Yes we can.
When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land,
she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new
sense of common purpose. Yes we can.
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she
was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was
saved. Yes we can.
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that “We
Shall Overcome.” Yes we can.
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was
connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this
election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because
after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of
hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.
America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much
more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should
live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live
as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress
will we have made?
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our
time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for
our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to
reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that
out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we
are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t,
we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a
people:
Yes We Can. Thank you, God bless you, and may God Bless the United
States of America.  virginia manassas change election2008 barack yeswecan presidentobama yeswedid

Still the One: Shania Twain Returns

by Mike Krumboltz

Shania Twain

The Country Music Awards were last night, and people are still talking. But it wasn’t a poorly lip-synched performance or slurred acceptance speech that got folks excited. Rather, it was the unexpected return of Canadian country music star Shania Twain.

After four years of flying under the radar, the lovely songstress presented the night’s final award — entertainer of the year — to Kenny Chesney. Upon taking the stage, she received a standing ovation, and then hinted that fans can expect to be hearing more from the crooner. Quoteth Ms. Twain: “I hope to be seeing a lot more of you.”

Searchers certainly sought out more on Shania. Queries on her name surged 140% to land among our top 1,000 overall terms. Related lookups on “shania twain dress,” “shania twain cma 2008,” and “where has shania twain been” also posted big gains.

The last query is telling. According to People, Twain’s “presence marked the singer’s first public appearance since announcing her separation from husband Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange in May.” She’s been out of the public eye for sometime, but based on last night’s appearance, fans are thrilled to have her back. And for those waiting for an album, sources report that Twain “hasn’t put down her guitar since the split. The songs are pouring out of her.”

Man, it feels like a comeback.

Today’s Wonder Woman Rumor

by Mike Krumboltz

Beyonce

Whatever challenges Wonder Woman will face in her movie, they’ll surely pale in comparison to what fans went through in the years it took to get her to the big screen. The countless casting rumors, the constant teases — oh, what painful memories!

Lamentably, we must add more innuendo to the pile. Not because we want to, but because the buzz is too high to ignore. Word has it that Beyonce may/might/maybe be in the running to play Wonder Woman. Perhaps. Searches on the singing-dancing-acting powerhouse are up 59%. Additionally, related queries on “beyonce as wonder woman,” “wonder woman beyonce” both surged as the rumors swirled.

Blogs jumped on the news as well. Stuff reported that Ms. Knowles is “in discussions to play Wonder Woman.” However, that might be a bit of a stretch. While it’s true that the curvaceous entertainer publicly declared her interest in playing the lasso-wielding heroine, there are no reports that her interest is being reciprocated by the film’s producers.

Such one-sided infatuation could change should the producers sign a director. MovieWeb thinks McG could be in line for the job. Well, maybe, but we’re not getting our hopes up. We’ve been hurt before.

Rahm’s Return to the White House

November 9th, 2008

Rahm’s Return to the White House

by Vera H-C Chan

Hail to the Chief of Staff

People are still having problems spelling the name of our president-elect, and now Barack Obama has gone ahead and appointed as chief of staff Rahm Emanuel—searched in the past seven days as Ron, Rob, Rom, Ram, Rahn, Rham, and Rohm. We won’t even go into the surname variations…although egregiously missing is his old moniker that the New York Times revived: Rahmbo.

However one spells the first Obama Cabinet member, the online frenzy for Emanuel surged an astonishing 75,473% before he accepted the position. That number makes him the fastest moving search term in the past seven days on Yahoo!. Add up all his misspelled searches, and he pushes past lookups for “miley cyrus” and “thanksgiving.”

The Search vetting process looked into his position as Illinois congressman, his bio, his Wikipedia entry, his religious affiliations, his nationality, his wife Amy Rule, his relationship with Israel, and (of course) his Clintonian legacy.

While his name has resonated in computers across all 50 states, the areas conducting due diligence most intensely include Delaware, Alabama, New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. Drill down to the cities, however, and the people who most want to know about Emanuel come from Victoria (Texas), Lake Charles (La.), Hattiesburg-Laurel (Miss.), Springfield (Mo.), and Chattanooga (Tenn.)

The Buzz had plenty to offer in Emanuel reminisces. The New York Times brought up the steak knife catharsis ritual. Both Defamer and Time offered fun facts, such as his ballet training, and how he inspired the Josh Lyman character on “The West Wing” (which, incidentally, bubbled up 56% in searches). The Huffington Post dug up an old Valentine’s Day Politico blog that ran through his wicked political punch lines at a party.

In case all this rough stuff has worried people, NPR does talk about how his infamously short temper may have mellowed with age (he turns 49 on November 29), which would put him more in sync with Obama’s calmer “change” mode. If not, at least the new antics could provide fodder for “The West Wing: The Next Generation.”
